How Often Do Japanese Do 土下座 Dogeza?

土下座 Dogeza /doɡeza/ is the act of kneeling down with your knees on the ground and bending your upper body forward while lowering your head. It is generally done when apologizing or expressing regret. It is also done in reverence to a person or the object of worship. 土下座 Dogeza seems to be like a kind of Japanese culture.

As a Japanese person who has lived for almost 40 years, I have never actually witnessed a real 土下座 Dogeza. I have heard that there are still scenes where people bow to apologize, mainly in movies and in situations with really bad harassment, but I have never seen it in person.

However, the culture still exists in daily life. Let me share the screen of my team communication. Almost every day, I see 土下座 Dogeza as icons on Slack, a communication app in the office.
